VERSATILE NOISE TROOPERS
Versatile Noise Troopers is Gilb’R, I:Cube, Joakim and Etienne Jaumet's first ever analogue joint live performance.
We were pleased to welcome Château Flight (I:Cube and Gilb’R) and their stylish live set at Dancity Festival in 2008; in the same year, Joakim came with his band for a raging gig at the Dancity Festival Preview at Rockin' Umbria (Umbertide); Etienne Jaumet delighted the audience of the Auditorium with his surprising live set at Dancity Festival 2010, then returned the following year for Young Jazz in Town, with Gianluca Petrella and his trombone.
Our French friends are part of the family, this is why we decided to bring them together on the same stage to present the Versatile Noise Troopers project and celebrate 15 years of Versatile, their historical label.

Gilb’R
When someone sticks with a certain kind of activity through its highs and lows for the most part of his life, you can definitely call it a passion. With Gilbert Cohen alias Gilb’R, you would even have to speak of a calling. From his days as a musical programmer and DJ for the legendary Parisian station Radio Nova to his productions, remixes and partnership with I:Cube as Chateau Flight and maybe most important with Versatile Records.
The history of modern French electronic and dance music would look very different without this man and his label. Debuting with the established house classic Sunshine People, it soon spread into all kinds of directions. Versatile
the fundamental podium for I:Cube’s sound kaleidoscope, the Chateau Flight project, Joakim’s various skinning actions and artists like Zombie Zombie or Etienne Jaumet. Sticking to his love for DJ culture with 12”s and Gilb’r wider and open-minded approach to music with the album projects, Versatile really lives up to his name. An approach that can be easily applied to his work with I:Cube, too. Their Chateau Flight journey according to I:Cube follows “no system, [has] no formula, [and is] always a bit different…” Not the worst take if you want yourself and your listeners kept on your toes. From their first remix for Pierre Henry to singles like Cosmic Race or the Baroque EP for Innervisions, Chateau Flight stayed true to change and challenge. That might be difficult to sustain, but every adventure needs great thrills and Gilb’r is definitely still in the middle of one. sets from Brooklyn to Bombay and back again, you can catch him playing heavy techno and house sets as often as free-spirited dance music affairs, and if the vibe and place is right, all of it thrown together in one melting pot.
According to music journalist wisdom, Gilb’r is simply what they call a DJ’s DJ. And if you are still in doubt of all of that, you just have to check the brilliant Versatile blog (versatilerecords.com/blog) to check his inspiration information. To quote the man himself: “We just never stopped being music nerds.” And
we should be glad for that.

I:Cube
One of the best French producers. He has been around for such a long time and never disappoints. More prolific than ever, the legendary dj/producer I:Cube has just release no less than two EP for Versatile in less than 5
months and his about to put the finishing touches on his long due new album.

Joakim
Joakim is hard to pin down: part club music, part jazz, part electronic experimentalism.
One of France’s foremost electronic musicians, Joakm has a background in classical music, US & UK indie rock and jazz. He discovered electronic music after a schoolfriend left his synthetiser in Joakim's room, later latching onto indie and electronic labels such as Warp and Mo Wax. His first album ‘Tiger Sushi’ was ambient electro-jazz, before he moved onto electronics with ‘Fantômes’ [2003], and later ‘Monsters and Silly Songs’ [2007], on which he
combines post-rock, disco, electronics and, well, silly songs. "Making a pure dance album would almost be like composing an album entirely in F major,” says Joakim. “I jump from one idea to the next. I simply have to try everything and see where it leads." Joakim runs the Tigersushi label, releases a broad spectrum of music
including Maurice Fulton, E.S.G, Poni Hoax and Metro Area. Joakim does live sets, DJs and he’s also a remixer; he’s recut tunes from Tiga, Air and Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ - the latter of which was one of the biggest club
tunes of 2006. Finally, he also has a live band, Joakim and the Ectoplasmic Band, on which he plays machines, keyboards, guitars and sings. Fingers in many pies then.

Etienne Jaumet
French producer and musician Etienne Jaumet started out in the ’90s with folk rockers The Married Monk, before going into the studio as an engineer and working on his own projects. One of these is the Krautrock-infused electrodisco outfit Zombie Zombie with Neman Herman Düne (of Herman Düne). Jaumet’s debut album, Night Music was released in October 2009 by Domino Recording Co. in the US. Inspired by the work of avant-minimalist Steve Reich, the record was produced by Carl Craig.
