The beautiful and glacial Kateryna Zavoloka, born in Kiev, Ukraine, is despite her young age one of the most interesting players in the field of European experimental music of the past years. Deeply tied to her own cultural traditions, from the start she has been on a personal search for new types of sounds, in which digital synth noises and reprocessed/manipulated loop cut-ups delicately blend with typical folk tunes of Eastern Europe. Cold electronica, unusual but soft, packed with ancestral emotions. Zavoloka has collaborated with important musicians of the new Ukraine electronic music scene, such as Andrey Kiritchenko, founder of the Nexsound label, and musician Kotra; to be noted, the collaboration with another woman-guru of experimental electronica, AGF from Berlin. Aphex Twin wanted her as well to support his new audiovisual show. Zavoloka is in fact also a graphic designer, and has created most of the artwork for label Kvitnu, under which her latest album Vedana was released. Zavoloka was featured in an article dedicated to her in 2007 for The Wire. She has performed in the biggest experimental music festivals, including Unsound in New York and Transmediale Club in Berlin.
