Justin Palermo's performances involve the use of objects, drawings and artefacts in a narrative context with occasional and surprising detours. Reminiscent of an archaeologist or a collector, the artist creates an enigmatic mood which explores different notions of personal and collective dreams.
“I am fascinated by the tiny accumulations of a person’s life. I’m even more fascinated by what gets left behind, what remains. I search for a way to use these materials to tell a new story – a story we’ve seen in parts but never all together. The stories behind the work cannot be pinned down easily. These are stories without a beginning or and end, with many more questions than answers.
Looking at these photographs, these familiar snapshots full of the stuff we know, I had the urge to crop, to cover, to obscure them in glitter, confetti and bits and pieces. This is an ongoing project researching what happens when something nostalgic and personal is mixed with something cheap and disposable. Some kind of concealment has always been done to the photograph, and the paradox is that through this, something is clarified.”
